I hope to elucidate the general themes of this conjunction using a combination of theory, observations and speculation based on general trends already occurring. Once I have explained the technicalities and defining characteristics associated with this conjunction, I will offer interpretation via an explanation of the nature of the planets in question, and the sign of their occupation and ruling planet. To explore the possible meaning of this highly significant astrological event, I will provide an interpretation of the broader context, taking key aspects to stimulate discussion surrounding their psycho-socio-spiritual influences and affects.

Jupiter takes approximately 11.9 years to navigate its way around the entire 360ยฐ of the zodiac, whereas Saturn takes 29.5 years. This means that every 20 years, they conjoin in the same degree on the ecliptic to form a โ€œgreat conjunctionโ€. A yet rarer phenomenon is when these two planets conjunctions shift from one element into the next. This we term โ€œgrand mutationโ€. These grand mutations happen every 200 years.
Between 1802 and 2020, Jupiter and Saturnโ€™s conjunctions occurred in earth signs, denoting changes that occurred via the development of solid building blocks, for the strategic setting up of structures and hierarchies that expanded globally. The upcoming conjunction signifies a movement into the ephemeral and spacious air element. It represents an epoch of social transformation for the whole of humanity.

It has been touched upon by only a small number of astrologers, that at the end of 1980, we experienced a shift of the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction into the air sign, Libra. This carried through to 1981, culminating in a triple pass. This rare phenomenon is highly significant and will be discussed in due course. Therefore the energies of the grand mutation into air were initiated in 1980, despite the Jupiter/Saturn conjunctions completing their full complement of earth, conjoining in Taurus, in 2000. Itโ€™s true to say that Jupiter and Saturnโ€™s combined energies of the last 40 years or so have synergised baselines of earth element preoccupations with the connective element of air.

Throughout this December, Jupiter and Saturn will be within no more than a degree of separation. The exact conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn will occur on Winter Solstice at 4:50 PM when both planets will be at 00ยฐ:28โ€ of Aquarius. They will remain fully conjoined until 7:52 PM, when Jupiter will be moving one minute of a degree ahead of Saturn. It will be their closest encounter since 1623. The last conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius was 615 years ago, on January 7th 1405.
Historically, element mutations are associated with significant changes that can seem drastic and dramatic.

40 years ago, the air conjunction in relationship-conscious Libra coincided with changes that transformed the way we communicated with each other, increasing our opportunities to socialise and form new relationships (cafes, dating agencies, discos). Jupiter and Saturnโ€™s conjunction in speedy Gemini in 2000 then provided us shortcuts: instant information and communication via the home computer, Google, social media, tracking technologies, wireless technology and biotech, culminating in significant downsides such as โ€œmillennium bug” fear, logarithmic-based Machiavellian AI technological applications that demote and threaten the health and wellbeing of humanity, and the planet as an essential source of all life.

It occurs with Jupiter and Saturn conjoining at zero degrees of Aquarius. This new synodic cycle represents endings, completions and new beginnings, signified by both planets beginning a new journey together in the same sign. Best look at where this conjunction is taking place in your natal chart to gain an understanding of the areas of life that are likely to be affected by this returning cycle. This can be incredibly useful for those wanting to consciously work with these new operative energies, and gain personal insight into their relationship with Aquarian potentials and ideals.

This conjunction will give us a strong dose of Aquarius, which is ruled by Uranus. Both the sign and the planet promote that we exist as unique sources of energy, and that we make positive contributions to envisioning the future version of our world. Uranus is the connective force in the Universe, it is also the electrical energy that connects all the chakras. It rules the nervous system and the fibre-optic light system that governs our energetic matrix, and connects us to what exists beyond the perceived boundaries of time and space. Uranus is a transpersonal planet that has a way of unexpectedly dispensing with outdated, mundane and traditional ways of operating, in order for us to envision the future. It rules science and technology, hence its first sighting coinciding with the discovery of electricity, and the inceptions of the French and American revolutions.
Being an outer planet, it serves as a force that extends our awareness, transcending our dependence on operating purely within the limitations of the rational mind (governed by Mercury). Instead, Uranus facilitates that we extend our awareness towards Universal mind. Itโ€™s the planet of genius, bolts from the blue, chaos and disruption. By nature, it innovates our recognition of the non-logical, non-linear forces that benefit the evolution of humanitarian ideals. Whether we experience it as exciting or disruptive cannot be generalised about, and instead depends on a wide myriad of factors. No planet or sign operates discretely.
Jupiter expands, enhances and increases whatever it comes into contact with. It broadens our horizons so we can appreciate the bigger picture, incorporate the wisdom of our higher aspects that provide clarification and insight about the journeys and adventures necessary to not just our own expansion, but the Universeโ€™s. Saturn on the other hand, is the reductive force in the universe. It rules time and the maturation process and helps us to develop a working relationship with duty, responsibility, and give respect to boundaries. Through Saturn, we learn fundamental lessons about what is truly necessary and what is not. Itโ€™s the planet of hard work and commitment and teaches us to develop the skilful means necessary to become secure within ourselves, so that we may operate in well-measured ways that benefit the outer world that reap substantial results that withstand challenge.
Both planets will have moved out of Capricorn (ruled by Saturn), putting behind their recent conjunctions with Pluto and squares to Mars. The end of a cycle is a โ€œdo or dieโ€ time. The culmination of Capricornian energy has been fully challenged by Plutoโ€™s conjunction with them, plus Marsโ€™ super lengthy 6th month transit through Aries, during which its retrograde motion formed prolonged squares to both planets. It has been a dark night. The unconscious forces in power have made themselves known, and their influence have triggered sudden unprecedented changes at a global level. It has been a time when confronting the shadow as individuals, and as part of a Collective has been unavoidable.
The great conjunction represents a major turning point. Potentially, there are in-built motivational opportunities to help us break free from the slow, heaviness of earth, via Aquarius who requires that we acknowledge our individuality and transcend our habituated identification with the outdated structures and hierarchies that operate against our natural urge for liberation and freedom. Jupiter in Aquarius is ready to redesign society creatively and help maximise our ability to be connected to networks and groups that are concerned with humanities revolution. It favours personal autonomy and independence as much as group connection and collective orientation. It wants us to seek new ways of belonging within our chosen communities, groups and organisations, providing they reflect our clearest spiritual vision and aspirations.
Saturn in Aquarius also values autonomy and innovation, but asks that we ground our vision of the future, shaping it maturely and realistically. It does not want Jupiter or Aquarius getting carried away. It wants us to act responsibly. However, before it can construct its vision, there is preliminary work to do. We can see that throughout 2021, it will periodically be squaring Uranus in early Taurus. We can expect changes to financial markets, supply chains, and currencies, generally changing how we use money and resources โ€“ all Taurus’ domain. Saturn will be destabilising these Taurean concerns. Underneath the chaos, the square is asking that we make a commitment to our future self, to aid us to consciously move forward, having stoically assimilated the teachings of 2020. Thus, the air element requires us to make decisions about the future, based on all we have newly gathered. However, Aquarius will take us into new, unexpected territory that could very well connect us with all that Uranus represents: higher mind, transpersonal nature, that which lies beyond the regular dimensions we inhabit in our waking state. It could deliver a new layer of experience to the waking state, that in the spirit of Uranus, will be straight from the galaxy, and completely unpredictable.

The event could signify a bifurcation in the broadest sense. Jupiter says โ€œyesโ€ and Saturn says โ€œnoโ€. Or it could be a combination, i.e. โ€œnot yet. Not until you are more grown up and righteously inspired will you be ready to embrace your true and sovereign nature. Your endeavours should indicate that freedom belongs in responsible hands, hearts and mindsโ€. It is the birthing of new potentials into the collective, but also into our personal awareness, so weโ€™re able to create it in a material, fully operational sense. Shaking, rumbling, testing and chaos may be afoot, but itโ€™s time to move away from whatever will not sustain our highest and most realistic visions going into the future. Overall, the benefits are likely to take their time to become apparent. The periods of retrograde will mean we have important time to reflect and consolidate as we continue traversing new territories. The only thing of certainty is uncertainty. It is a deeper call to embrace the uncertainty and consciously incorporate it into our lives as an important mentor.
